Is Acne A Skin Disease?

Acne is a type of inflammatory skin disease. The symptoms of acne are redness, swelling, developing blisters on the skin. Acne is the condition of skin that has affected many people during their teen age. Acne is also developed by the adults of 20 or 30 years. Medical treatment improves the appearance of the acne. Acne is caused by several external factors. Hormonal changes during adolescence enlarge the oil glands in the skin.

The canals that bring oil to the surface of the skin are clogged by the protein known as keratin.  When these oil glands become overactive and the canals are clogged the bacteria that reside on the surface of the skin and in the oil gets trapped thereby multiplying themselves. These trapped bacteria cause inflammation and irritation of the skin. Though acne is common, it should be left untreated. Mild acne is treated with topical medications.

If your skin gets irritated, decrease the frequency of application. Moderate and severe acne is treated with topical medicines in addition with the oral antibiotics. Acne surgery, accutane therapy are some of the other treatments. Food habits are also responsible for development of acne. Excess of sugar and carbohydrates should be avoided as they loose the wrong kind of hormones thus causing acne.
