How is Atopic Dermatitis Diagnosed?

The primary step towards detecting this disease is by conducting a visual inspection of affected skin areas by a health care provider. Itchiness, red rashes, dryness, cracks on the skin are some of the most evident symptoms of the disease. Therefore, it is quite likely that your physician confirms the presence of Atopic Dermatitis right after a thorough physical examination of these symptoms. He may further ask you questions pertaining to the history of the evident rashes and blisters on your body so as to identify the triggers for these symptoms. He may also ask questions on the medical history of the patient to learn about the occurrence of asthma and hay fever as these seasonal allergies are closely linked to dermatitis.

There are no specific blood tests or other laboratory tests to diagnose this disease. This is because in most of the cases, a physical examination is adequate to detect the presence of this infection. However, if a regular examination does not hint towards the disease, a skin biopsy may be conducted. In this test, a sample of the petite piece of infected skin is obtained and tested under a microscope. In case, the any one disease still fails to get established a patch test is done with the help of the skin swab.
