What are Boils?

Boils are known as an infection that is deeply under the skin.  A boil, starts out as a tender, red area.  Throughout a period of time, this area becomes very hard and firm.  Eventually, a boils’ center where the abscess is will soften and fill with white blood cells that help to fight the infection.  With all the bacteria, proteins, and white blood cells it is called pus.  The pus will finally “come to a head,” at that point, it might have to be sugerical lanced.  Boils are known as an abscess to a person’s skin.

There are numerous types of boils.  Amongst them are:

  • Carbuncle or Furuncle – This type of skin abscess is caused when there are bacteria in the affected area.
  • Hidradenitis suppurativa – People tend to see this type of skin abscesses when their sweat glands are inflamed.

Cystic acne – This type forms when a person’s oil duct is clogged and then infection arises.

  • Pilonidal cyst – Usually occurs within the crease of a person’s buttock from an infected hair follicle.

Maintenance and cleanliness hygiene is the best way a person can participate in to help avoid boils from attacking a person’s body.
