Impetigo is a skin infection which is caused by staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. This infection is more common among the children and especially the ones who are in school going age. The initial signs of impetigo appear as patches of red and itchy skin on hands and face though it can affect any part of the body. There are mainly two types of impetigo which include non bullous impetigo and bullous impetigo.
Non bullous impetigo is the most common form which is caused by the both staphylococcus and streptococcus bacteria. This infection appears as scabs or small blisters which later on becomes like honey colored or yellow crusts. Non bullous impetigo generally starts from nose and may affect arms and legs as well. Bullous impetigo is another form which is caused by staphylococcus bacteria which produces toxins that leads to the breaking of the epidermis and the lower level of the skin and forms blister. Though these blisters can appear at various different areas of the body but they are especially found on the buttocks. Impetigo is a highly contagious infection which passes from one person to other through several ways including direct contact, clothes, towel, toys and other household items. |
