What is Seborrheic Eczema?

Seborrheic Eczema or Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin disorder which affects the scalp, trunk and face and causes flaky, itchy, scaly and red skin. This disorder mainly affects the areas of the skin which are rich and concentrated in sebum gland.

This disease is determined genetically and is not contagious. Besides face and scalp this type of eczema also affects chest, nose, ears, eyebrows and eyelids, forehead and chin. The symptoms of this disorder is unattractive, uncomfortable and unpleasant and especially during winters when sunlight is less. Initially Seborrheic Eczema starts with greasy or dry scaling of the scalp area which becomes oily, red and can also cause itching. This condition may also be thought as a severe dandruff case but it is caused by the inflammation in the upper skin layer which leads to whitish yellow scaly skin and redness.

Odor may also be experienced as there is buildup of bacteria on the scalp. Apart from other symptoms temporary hair loss may also be experienced in some cases. The treatment of this disorder is mainly aimed to give relief from its various symptoms like itching, redness and others using cleansers, shampoos and other topical. Alternative treatments are also an effective way to get relief from its symptoms.
