Nummular Eczema is a skin allergy where coin shaped spots and patches appear on legs, arms, back, chest and buttocks. The symptoms of this allergy begins as a group of small red spots and lesions which later on merge to form an itchy, red and coin shaped patch having diameter of 2 to 10 cm. In new patches the fluid may ooze out and make them crusty whereas the chronic persistent ones become scaly.
These patches are uniformly brown or red in the color in its initial stages, but later on they get cleared up and form a ring as in ringworm infection. Other symptoms of these patches include itchiness and burning which may even spread to the trunk. In cases when the infection is caused by Staphylococcus aureus then the patches may develop a yellow crust.
This allergic condition may start with one or many patches and can continue for months as well as years. The symptoms of Nummular Eczema can also get worse by various environmental factors. Since this disease is associated with dry skin thus frequent bathing or washing, using soap, fabric softener residue can aggravate and worsen the symptoms. Changes and temperature and extreme temperature can also flare up the infection and symptoms.
