Symptoms of Shingles

When the chickenpox virus reactivates, it leads to a person having shingles.  A rash might appear on your body in different areas, but only on the right side or the left.  First, the rash will form small blisters, then they will start to scab over, and a little over a week or so they will begin to clear up.  This type of rash is the well-known sign that an individual has shingles.  This shingle type rash is very painful, than it is itchy.
Shingles tend to develop in certain stages:

  • The beginning of the rash appearance – Prodromal Stage: The affected area may become tingling, painful, numb, tickling, and/or burning for a few days to a week before the rash is noticed.  An individual might also experience flu-like symptoms.
  • Once the blisters and rash appear – Active Stage:  The strip, small patch, or band type rash appears.  Then the rash has appeared the blisters will begin to form.
  • Chronic, painful stage – Post herpetic neuralgia: This is the common complications of having shingles.  Post herpetic neuralgia could last for up to a month or longer.

Sometimes shingles are confused with other herpes simplex infection and appendicitis because of the similar symptoms that they have in common.
