Treatment of atopic dermatitis includes a perfect treatment plan given by the doctor. This treatment plan will be based on the patient’s lifestyle, age and his overall health condition. The treatment can be anything given below or combination thereof:
Topical creams and medications: Medications for atopic dermatitis include use of over the counter ointments and corticosteroid creams. Apart from this Tacrolimus (Protopic) and Pimecrolimus (Elidel) are other powerful topical creams which are quite effective. Immune modulator drugs are helpful in treatment of atopic dermatitis. Use of antibiotics is also an important way of treating these skin problems. These are available in the form of topical creams as well as oral pill forms. Certain antihistamines are used so that itching and scratching is avoided during the sleeping hours. In case if atopic dermatitis causes fungal infection on the skin the doctor will have to prescribe antifungal medications. When other treatments for atopic dermatitis fail, the doctor prescribes this treatment in which the drugs like Prednisone are either taken orally or are injected in the body. In case of severe cases of atopic dermatitis, immunosuppressive drugs, such as cyclosporine can be used in treatment.
Phototherapy: In this therapy ultraviolet light A and/or B are used. This treatment will be effective if the atopic dermatitis is mild or moderate.
Photo chemotherapy: This treatment is the combination of ultraviolet light therapy along with treatment with psoralen. |
