What Types of Treatments are there for Eczema?

The treatment for eczema is targeted to give relief from itching and redness. which could otherwise lead to skin infection. There are different types of eczema but the most common one is atopic dermatitis. Contact eczema, seborrheic eczema, dyshidrotic eczema and nummular eczema are some other forms of eczema.
Eczema tends to make the skin flaky, dry and itchy. Thus use of moisturizers and lotions is the most common part of the treatment. Cold compresses are also recommended to keep the skin cool.

In case of contact eczema, topical creams are used to keep the skin moist. Also the doctors normally recommend the patient to keep away from the allergens.
In case of other forms of eczema large amount of hydrating creams and oils are used to preserve the moisture of the skin. The patients are told to take bath occasionally. Eczema can lead to severe inflammation on the skin. Oral steroids and corticosteroid will help to treat this condition. If the itching is unbearable then the doctor may prescribe oral antihistamines.

Photo therapy is also an eczema treatment which can impart some relief. Most of the doctors prescribe oral medications to suppress the symptoms of eczema.
Apart from these treatments, it is important that the patient:

  • Should not take hot baths
  • Should wear cotton clothing only
  • Avoids harsh soaps
  • Keeps skin hydrated
  • Does not take certain vaccinations like small pox which may make the problem even more severe
